Heading toward La Nina? Bookmark and Share

6:03 PM Thu, Nov 10, 2005 |

The Climate Prediction Center has gathered the latest data on sea surface temperatures and winds over the Pacific. It's trying to determine whether the U.S. is headed toward an El Nino, a La Nina... or neither. Those patterns influence what kind of winter we have here in the Northwest.

The information gathered shows trade winds near the equator are actually stronger than normal. Trade winds blow from east to west. It also shows sea surface temperatures are closer to normal than they have been. That definitely does NOT suggest we're headed for a warm, El Nino pattern.

Instead, the Northwest will probably experience a neutral pattern (and that means an average winter), or could be headed toward a La Nina pattern, which typically produces cooler, wetter weather. However, if a La Nina pattern develops, that probably won't happen until next spring, so it wouldn't have much impact on our coming winter.

I'll leave you with one interesting fact; many of our heaviest individual snow storms have occurred during "neutral" pattern winters. The next few months should be very interesting!

I really hope it does snow a lot this winter! Why would heavier snow storms occur during a neutral patterned winter vs. a La Nina patterned winter?
