Texas got its big bump by thumping a top 10 team, while USC was throttling a weak Washington team. Therein lies the problem in this week's poll: strength of schedule. But USC has done nothing to lose its number one ranking. The Trojans won a huge game at Notre Dame, just as Texas won a huge game at Ohio state. Truth is, USC could have racked up over 70 points on the Huskies if Pete Carroll wanted to. He called off his dogs to give UW's Dawgs a break. Bottom line, the Trojans' offense can flick a switch and go. For the most part, they just toy with opponents almost scoring at will. And as a 30-point favorite Saturday against the cougars, expect the same thing. Texas is rock solid, with arguably the best defense in the country. But until that defense stops USC's high-octane offense, the Trojans are still the number one team in the nation. Knock 'em off at the end of the year, then you can call Texas number one. For now, the Horns are just a strong two. 2 Comments |
You're absolutely right. USC is the better team (even though they trounced my Huskies), and the BCS system is a mess.
Seems that the BCS and all these computer polls have lost sight of gamesmenship and respect for an inferior opponent. Pete Carroll is a gentlman and a good coach (he is not Steve "Ol' Ball Coach" Spurrier). He knows he is going to be playing all these Pac-10 teams again, when they are the bully on the block. Pete doesn't want his kids getting a thrashing anymore than he wants to give one.
Any human being on earth can see that USC is the best team in the nation, why should they have to impress some computers?
