From Jean Enersen in memory of a friend

1:04 PM Thu, Oct 06, 2005 |

This just in from Jean Enersen: "My dad loved his doctor, Jim Tremann, a urologist who treated dad's various health problems. He had supreme confidence in this doctor, a confidence we think helped dad get through long and grueling surgeries. We three kids (all adults - a lawyer, a teacher and a reporter) were always treated kindly by Dr. Tremann, when acting as dad's 'board of directors'
for his surgery and treatment..."

Needless to say, given our professions, we asked him a lot of questions. Dr. Tremann was patient with us, and both caring and skilled with dad. It was with great regret dad learned that Dr. Tremann would retire last year. And it was with profound regret that we learned this week Dr. Tremann had died. It was from complications of hemachromatosis. It is an inherited disease in which iron accumulates and damages the body, especially the liver. It can be diagnosed with a blood test, but is often missed in check-ups.
Dr. Tremann was a REAL ironman:
He had the strength, the ability and the caring quality that helped pull so many of his patients through tough times. He stood for hours in long surgeries, even though his own body was hurting from the disease about which he rarely spoke. Our thoughts are with his wife and family as they deal with the loss of this great man. And Dr. Tremann gets the last word, the bottom line in his obituary in the paper today in all capitals says: "P.S. CHECK YOUR IRON LEVELS."
