Don't panic over bird flu

8:45 AM Fri, Oct 28, 2005 |

You have heard of doctors without borders. Well, now welcome microbes without borders. That's how health experts describe the spread of bird flu. It will know no national boundaries! It's not clear though that bird flu will be a pandemic, a nationally known expert told me today. Spend your health resources wisely, he said. Get a plain old flu shot, if you are in a high-risk group (it won't ward off the bird flu but will help your immune system), but don't panic...

Having said that, there are definitely things we can do that give us a sense of control over some of our circumstances. According to Dorothy Teeter, acting head of the Seattle King County Health Department, wash your hands. Wash them again. Use liquid hand sanitizers. Our hands are disease transmission site number one! Cover your cough. If you are sick with flu, don't go to work or school.

Local public health officials are "taking this very seriously" according to teeter.

For more on bird flu, watch our series on KING 5 morning news 7-9 a.m., starting Monday. See you there. Thank you.
