A bit of an eclipse

1:52 PM Fri, Oct 14, 2005 |

Monday morning could treat western Washington residents to a partial eclipse of the moon; I say could because at this time of the year, getting clear skies is always an "iffy" matter.

Here are the specifics. The very partial eclipse will occur at 5:03 Monday morning, October 17th. How partial is partial? Very-only seven percent of the moon will be covered by the earth's shadow. But if skies clear Sunday night, it might be worthwhile to set your alarm early, say about 4:30. The outer part of the earth's shadow will graze the moon then, but the inner and darker part of the earth's shadow will move over a sliver of the moon shortly after 5 a.m. If it's cloudy out, hit the snooze alarm and go back to sleep-for awhile-after all, it will be Monday morning.
