This week, it's Drago vs. Corr; Licata vs. Bascomb. Who do you think won the Up Front debate?
The magic number is 50%. If an incumbent gets less than 50% in the primary, the pundits and press start asking, is that incumbent in trouble? Perhaps it's an arbitrary number, but everyone still talks about it. And in the primary, no incumbent on the Seattle City Council got over 50%. With that in mind, challengers are emboldened and incumbents are hitting the campaign trail. From the monorail to South Lake Union and all the issues in between, KING 5 News Up Front and The Seattle Times present the debates for City Council. We are airing four debates without commercial interruption. Last week, Port Commissioner Paige Miller challenged incumbent Richard Conlin and King County Councilman Dwight Pelz faced incumbent Richard McIver. This week, two challengers--former Nickel's staffer Casey Corr and real estate broker Paul Bascomb--get their opportunity to make their case for change, as they face-off with incumbents Jan Drago and Nick Licata. After watching the debates, who do you think won and who will get your vote?

You can watch all the debates on streaming video at our Up Front Web site. Jim Brunner and Bob Young from The Seattle Times join in to ask the questions.
You wonder why Paige Miller is not running for her Port commissioner job she knew she would be voted out because of the following:
The Port Commissioners lead by Paige Miller to raise property-tax revenue 45 percent in 2003.
The Port Commissioners lead by Paige Miller voted 3-2 to raise
property-tax revenue by 5 percent to $62.7 million
Port Commissioner Paige Miller expects to provide $60 million to $80 million for the light rail to go from a park-and-ride lot in Tukwila to Sea-Tac Airport.
The decision by Commissioners Miller, Davis and Edwards to issue a press release without consulting or even informing two of its commissioners on donating to the waterfront trolley. Port of Seattle commissioners voted 3-to-2 to contribute $1 million toward a $9 million plan to build a new waterfront streetcar-maintenance barn in Pioneer Square.
Port of Seattle commissioners will donate to the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement.
Port of Seattle commissioners may help pay for the 47-mile rail corridor owned by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.
It seems you increase revenue by raising property tax and Airport fees then spend it on some none port projects.
I wonder what ever happened to the charges against the Port of Seattle officials Paige Miller and Pat Davis with possibly violating the open meetings act and improperly proposing to donate port land for a waterfront streetcar extension to benefit two port commission members who are running for public office?
Paige Miller seamed to be falling apart and grasping for straws during the debate.
Jan Drago’s performance on “Up Front” epitomizes the dangers of incumbency. Throughout the debate, I heard not one positive word from her. Rather, her record of increasing taxes, failure to provide fiscal oversite and discipline and her support of the financially irresponsible Monorail clearly put Ms. Drago on the defensive: on the wrong side of leadership and fiscal responsibility demanded by the citizenry of Seattle. Further, Ms. Drago’s continual interruptions of Mr. Corr, Mr. Mack and others proved again that giving too much power to an incumbent leads to abuse exemplified by Ms. Drago’s lack of professionalism, courtesy and manners. Ms. Drago’s failure to adequately defend her record, failure to provide positive solutions to Seattle’s problems combined with her lack of manners and courtesy have caused this voter to vote against her.
Did Ms. Drago interupt enough ? She feels the competition gaining on her and the postions she has had are crumbling..Drago is slipping down the slope and she is grasping for help. Corr looked calm and collected.. I steady skipper for the upcoming pressures he'll face on the Council..
Paul Bascomb accuses his opponent of being an “obstructionist” during the debate for only opposing new ideas with out proposing any alterative. When Licata explained why he opposed the example of the south Lake Union trolley, Bascomb said he would also oppose or “obstruct” the trolley and didn’t propose any alternative. Just a tad to hypocritical for me.
I was appalled by Jan Drago's behavior. Was she sober? She interupted Casey Corr three times and Robert Mak once. Ms. Drago came across as negative and pushy. No wonder she's accomplished so little in 12 years except collect her pay check via our tax dollars. It's a good thing I was not in Casey's seat. I have a short fuse with such rudeness. Mr. Corr gets our vote for patience and diplomacy. It's time for continued fresh ideas and blood on City Council. I can't wait till November.
Jan Drago seemed completely unprofessional as she debated issues with opponent Casey Corr. Not only did Drago interrupt Corr several times, she also went on to interrupt the interviewer, Robert Mack. Jan Drago's appearance was also frightening...who knew that an old fortune teller with fake hair could be a city council member for 12 years?!
