Shortly after we ran our documentary about prostate cancer called "Saving the Men We Love," I received a letter from a woman whose husband has incurable prostate cancer. The standard PSA test didn't pick it up. A biopsy did, but only after it had spread to other organs. "I would love to save the man I love," his wife wrote, but it's too late. She asked why we didn't tell this kind of story -- not just the men who are tested early, the cancer found and a life saved... I was very moved by the woman's letter, called her, and she told me she was just reading about a new blood test now being evaluated at the University of Michigan that might pick up prostate cancer earlier. I promised to follow up. The reason we do these specials is to underscore the importance of early detection. We know such tests sometimes miss the early evidence. But our aim is not to scare people away from testing. It is to help viewers get the latest information, and this woman is helping us do just that. With her help, we hope others can save the men they love. 2 Comments |
