The people here are enormously grateful for all the donations, the army of volunteers and rescuers, and for the soldiers who have restored order. Still you can feel the temperature rising in New Orleans. Not so much outside where it’s been hot for quite some time, but in the attitudes of the people of the Crescent City...
Many have lost everything, but none has lost affection for New Orleans, and they are sick of talk about bulldozing their city, which, by the way, contains some of those oldest, most historic and beautiful neighborhoods in America. They’re sick of busy signals from FEMA. They’re sick of the de-humanizing lines at food stamp offices. They’re sick of red tape. They’re sick of waiting. They’re really sick of politicians. As a result of all that sickness there is a really cool bond of loyalty emerging. Loyalty to a city and a growing resolve to re-build it.
