Not a lump

3:41 PM Thu, Sep 29, 2005 |

Did you know that breast cancer is not always detected by finding a lump in the breast? Found less often but still important, it can be a lump in the neck or armpit. Also rare but very aggressive is a breast cancer called IBC, or inflammatory breast disease. This is not a lump, but a breast pain or breast skin discoloration. Other symptoms can include swelling, itching or nipple discharge. And a mammogram won't often pick it up.

So as is often the case, if you suspect you have these symptoms be an aggressive and firm advocate for your own health. It can be detected by ultrasound and biopsy. And it can be treated -- if caught early -- by chemo and surgery. Remember breast cancer isn't always a lump. And the HealthLink special on breast cancer scheduled for Oct. 7th won't be on the 7th either. It's been pre-empted by NBC's Katrina special. So "Breast Cancer: Winning the Battle" will now air Oct. 14th at 8pm. See you then, or tonight on KING 5 HealthLink.
