Mother and son reunited!

10:29 AM Mon, Sep 05, 2005 |

Rosezina Jefferson was on my mind most of the weekend.

We told you about her last week - how she jumped from the second floor of her New Orleans home into the flood waters. She was going to get help for her asthmatic son - even though she was pregnant and having contractions.

Thankfully, Rosezina was rescued and flown to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she gave birth to a healthy baby boy. I remember her saying through a stream of tears, "I'm happy about this baby... but I miss my other baby." She was devastated - not knowing if her oldest son had survived.

Then along came a miracle - and an angel!...

Would you believe, a friend saw Rosezina's story on CNN and called the hospital with the great news that her 5-year-old Ashton was alive and well and being cared for at the Houston Astrodome.

A secretary at the hospital, Shannon Easley, drove through the night, traveling more than 300 miles to Houston, Texas and back, to bring Rosezina a gift she will never forget.

On Saturday, Rosezina and her newborn were released from the hospital and sent to a local church, where the congregation set up a nursery for the baby and a wonderful surprise for her.

When the pastor opened a side door - there he was!!! The little boy Rosezina feared she would never hold again bolted into her arms! What a moment. The joy - tears, hugs, a shower of kisses - it's impossible to capture the emotion with mere words.

It was tear-jerker - a welcomed one - after seeing so much anguish over the past week.

Today, 5-year-old Ashton, his newborn baby brother Keith Jr., Rosezina and her fiance Keith are as they should be - together as a family. It is a miracle that gives hope to the thousands still searching for their loved ones.

The secretary who made it her mission to reunite them is an angel and a hero!

Shannon Easley represents the thousands of volunteers who right now are putting their own lives on hold to help bring love and comfort to those who are suffering.

They have our gratitude!

I too have been haunted by this story and thinking about a little five-year-old boy, all alone, having an asthma attack, with flood waters rising around his home. It seemed so unlikely that he would be saved, and such a terrifying and lonely death. I am SO happy and relieved to hear that he survived! What a miracle. Thank you so much for relaying this story.

My 12 year old daughter told me about this story but she was crying because she didn't know what happen to the child. I want to thank you for following up on this story. I'm sure a lot of people feel better knowing that miracles do happen to everyday people. I'm going to print this update to show my daughter.

Thank you!!!
