There they were, hundreds of people rowing in races on Lake Union this weekend, up at the crack of dawn, pulling their oars up to nearly 30 or 40 strokes a minute. Bright faces, red cheeks, happy smiles at the finish line. And there they were a few minutes later, having breakfast at a fundraiser, telling stories about why they rowed - to raise money for the Komen foundation to treat patients and to find a cure for breast cancer. One in seven of the women there will have breast cancer. Some of them have it now and raced anyway... It brings tears to my eyes to think how hard they try to overcome their disease and then how hard they work to raise money and to inspire others in their fight. How healthy they look how sick they are. But also how many of them are saved now, because we know with early detection more than 90 percent will make it. Please get checked once a year with a mammogram, starting at 40, earlier if you have a family history. Also do a monthly self exam starting at 20! Yes. Twenty. Cancer is starting earlier and earlier. One of the youngest fundraisers was a 7-year-old boy who raised $400 because his 2nd grade teacher was just diagnoised. Women, men and boys helping to save the women we love. 5 Comments |
