(Editor's note: KING-TV news director Pat Costello has traveled to Louisiana to help sister station WWL-TV cover the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.) Here in Baton Rouge at the temporary home of WWL-TV, you work 18-hour days that are some of the most intense you’ll find. At night you find a spot on the floor or curl up with a cot and sleep. Now I’d like to tell you that food and water here is rationed because that would make you feel sorry for us hard working journalists, but the fact is we eat. Boy, do we eat... Red beans and rice, jambalaya, gigantic sandwiches, spaghetti with homemade meatballs and sauce, soup, wraps, veggies, every variety of soft drink imaginable, and boudain. The locals came running into the newsroom one day shouting “Booo-danh!!” Booo-danh!!” People scrambled for the door where the food is. I looked at some of the other KING staffers here and shrugged. Since we don’t speak “Nahlens Lose-ee-anna” we were clueless. Then these now smiling people came in holding this Cajun sausage. We Northwesterners decided to try some. As Dave Niehaus would say; “My, oh my!!!” Trust me, this stuff is the Copper River salmon of Cajun food. So, if someone ever yells “booo-danh!” y’all start runnin fo it, ya hear. |
