Our hearts and our help are needed now

4:37 PM Wed, Aug 31, 2005 |

Our hearts go out to our neighbors to the south. The devastation they have seen so far - and which reveals new horrors each day - is more than I can comprehend. But we can help those in need...

From a health standpoint, the damage is serial tragedies: People who die when oxygen tanks fail, dialysis machines lose power, and lifesaving drugs run out. And there are the hundreds of thousands who simply cannot get clean water to drink, to cleanse, and to ward off dysentery. Doctors are having to choose who gets chemotherapy and who must go without. It's heartbreaking. Even seasoned news people like Dennis and me, watching along with you the same scenes you see on KING 5 - we can't keep from choking back tears. But we can help and help now. KING 5 is partnering with the Red Cross and Northwest Medical Teams to raise money to keep folks alive. You can help by donating to hurricane relief at 1 800-HELP-NOW. We will send our hearts and our help. Thank you.

I feel helpless and desperate to help these families! I don't believe that putting these people in the aster dome is the long term solution. These people will not be able to go back to their homes for months. Many of them I have seen on TV have said they don't want to go back.
I think that money donations are important. I believe that we need to do more, we fellow Americans need to open our homes to these people. We have to start helping them to be reabsorbed into new communities. If every home in the Seattle area, who could take in a family would, think of how many people we would be helping. Think of what would happen if everyone in America did that.
These people would have shelter they could start to look for jobs, the kids could go to school and in a few months between having jobs and getting FEMA assistance they would be able to get into their own house. Their lives would start to rebuild.
I know I am willing to open my house to a family who wants to restart fresh.
Get a job see their kids in school. I want to help them in this way. I don't care if they are black or white, yellow or purple, poor or rich. I don't care about any of that. My husband and I just want to help and I think that help needs to come in more than the form of money. Has anyone started to suggest this as a solution? I think it’s up to the media to start putting this out there. I know I can’t be the only person in America who feels this way.

I have put together a car wash fundraiser for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to be held on this Monday, Sept. 5 at Fire Station #7 in Tacoma from 10a-4p. It is located at 56th St. and Warner. Please stop by and get your car washed and donate what you can. If donating by check, make it payable to the RED CROSS.
Thank you to Jim Duggan of the Tacoma Fire Dept., who has been a great help with assisting me in putting this event together and to the Tacoma Police Dept, Public Works and a special Thanks to Amy and Yvonne of the City Clerks office who came through in a pinch to get a Special Events Permit signed by all departments above.
I hope as a community we can all come together, give what we can and make a difference for the families and loved ones devastated by Katrina.
Thank you in advance to all who will be stopping by on Monday. WE ALL CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

I can't believe it, my co-worker just bought a car for $41710. Isn't that crazy!
