I was truly saddened when I learned about the passing of Peter Jennings. As a reporter I have great respect for Brokaw and Rather, but as a viewer I was partial to Jennings. My admiration for him stemmed from the week of 9-11, when I was on vacation at a cabin in northern Idaho. The only station we could get on a old rundown TV set was the local ABC affiliate... We watched the horrible footage and heard the heartwrenching stories, with Jennings anchoring the news hour after hour, and day after day that week. He did it with such calm compassion and quiet sincerity, that I'm sure in some way he cushioned the blow for me and my husband. There is truth to the cliche about how after you watch someone anchor the news every night and "invite" them into your home, you feel like you know them. I can honestly say in my household, Jenning's voice and presence will surely be missed. 1 Comments |
Actually, Elisa, funny you should mention that.
I lost a parent shortly before the tragedy in your life. When news of your mother was broadcast, my heart really went out to you, and your absence was noted.
I don't know you, but you and your team are in my house every evening. You all are a small part of so many families. Hm.
