August 2005Our hearts go out to our neighbors to the south. The devastation they have seen so far - and which reveals new horrors each day - is more than I can comprehend. But we can help those in need... ...As Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast this morning, our Web servers got hit too by what may turn out to be unprecedented traffic. Not so much by people coming to KING5.com, but by people coming to our sister station sites closer to the action, primarily WWLTV.com, the Web site for New Orleans station WWL... ...The KING 5 HealthLink team, Pat Duggan, Joan Kinsey and I joined the more than 5,000 other women who entered the Danskin Triathlon this past weekend with the proceeds benefitting breast cancer research. There are so many eager participants, I'm told this Seattle Triathlon is in the Guinness Book of World Records. Our team finished -- that was a record for us, as none of us had ever even done a triathlon before. But the truly amazing part of th... We're happy to announce we've launched a new and improved KING5.com home page. Our goal is to make it easier for you to find the day's best stories and video. We added more news headlines, a "Video on Demand" section and a customized weather feature that provides the forecast for your zip code. You can also click on "video forecast" along the top of the home page to watch KING 5 meteorologists bring you up to date on the latest weather condi... Alright ... if I had a latte' for every time I've been asked about the chain letter sometimes titled "Mars Spectacular," I could open my own coffee shop. This chain letter, distributed via e-mail claims that on Aug. 27 the planet Mars will appear brighter than ever in history and "as large as the full Moon to the naked eye." Wrong... double wrong!...
We have had some cloudy days, even some drizzle, but don't be fooled, we are dry, very dry. And I'm talking about Western Washington. Last Friday's brush fire racing toward homes in Kent was a visible reminder that this is fire season for ALL of Washington. A cigarette thrown out of the window, a broken bottle, an exhaust pipe on tall grass could spark a fire. Please BE CAREFUL. ...Brandi Carlile's self-titled CD is the kind of album you want to tell everybody about. Her voice drips with southern twang, and even if she's never lived farther south than south King County, she is the real thing...
Just before vacation, I accepted an invitation to visit the Ronald McDonald House in Seattle. A good thing to do considering I'll be hosting their major fund raising event this fall.
Just as we don't "feel" gravity, we also don't "feel" the earth speeding through space. But we are, and this week, our planet is on a collision course with millions, or as Astronomer Carl Sagan liked to say "billions and billions" of particles left over from the Comet Swift-Tuttle. The result is the famous Perseid meteor shower, which will reach a peak the evenings of August 11th-12th and the 12th-13th... ...You've probably read about Joseph Edward Duncan III, the guy who is accused of killing young Dylan Groene in Idaho and Anthony Martinez in Riverside County, Calif. Now there's talk he's confessed to killing two other children, Sammie Jo White and Carmen Cubias in Seattle in 1996. The oldest of these kids was 11, the youngest two were nine. Regardless of w... I was truly saddened when I learned about the passing of Peter Jennings. As a reporter I have great respect for Brokaw and Rather, but as a viewer I was partial to Jennings. My admiration for him stemmed from the week of 9-11, when I was on vacation at a cabin in northern Idaho. The only station we could get on a old rundown TV set was the local ABC affiliate... ...
Whenever the KING 5 newsroom first learns about a plane crash -- like Thursday's midair collision over Renton -- there are some tense moments. Is it a small plane? Or an airliner? In the early stages of a breaking story, we get small fragments of information. Most of the time it's just a call over the police and fire scanners. On Thursday, one of the... The sun may be shining but it's never too early to make contact with the Winter athletes we'll be following to Torino. That's in the Italian Alps, where the world will meet next February to re-light the torch last raised in Salt Lake City back in 2002. Apolo Ohno, Libby Ludlow, Jill Bakken, Tom Rothrock; we'll be talking to them and more... ...
Providential. Yes, that was the word fire bosses used while fighting the wildfire here near Lake Wenatchee. That's how they described a wind shift no one expected, but everyone welcomed. The Dirty Face Fire had all the potential to race towards homes, but inexplicably the winds pushed the fire the other way. 600 firefighters, nearly 100 engines and a ...
I've covered more than a few wildfires but this is crazy: wearing our fleece jackets instead of those yellow shirts you see us sporting at fires. Well, that's exactly what my camera crew and I were wearing for our live broadcasts Monday night. With the wind it was even colder than it looked. But there is some good news here. The cooler weather helped slow the Dirty Face fire; at least for now. ...
