Placing troubled kids into foster families is hard work. No one argues with that. Timothy and Jonathan Swann are perfect examples. Their biological families were abusive and the boys were troubled children. The state placed them into a foster family who eventually adopted them. But then their adoptive father started molesting them. For years, DSHS receive complaints about the family from concerned citizens, but the state allowed the kids to stay in the home... The kids' attorney claims caseworkers failed to follow guidelines and conduct a thorough investigation. Were the caseworkers overworked? Were the children perceived to be too "troubled" to place into another family? Was there some reason to doubt the letters, emails and phone calls made from concerned citizens to the state? I wonder why the state issued just a 1-page written statement saying they didn't know about the abuse, instead of speaking out in defense of their social workers. I'm guessing the majority of them work hard to take care of troubled children like the Swann kids, and deserve a voice. And these kids say they deserve some answers. |
