Bob Weiss is a quick fix, but I can understand if he doesn't get your blood pumping. But think about it. Who's out there to coach this team? Read on... Best available in the NBA? Flip Saunders - and don't fool yourself, he wasn't coming here. Minnesota still owes him $5 million for next season, and he's not going to give that up unless an offer comes along for somewhere close to that number. Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo has no NBA experience - scratch him off the list. Lenny Wilkens, Paul Silas? Lenny's best days are behind him, and I don't think Silas is a better candidate than Weiss. Even if you think he's "a notch better," it's not worth starting over. PJ Carlisimo? Retread. With no knowledge of the Sonics. The only "interesting" choice would have been Suns assistant Mark Ivaroni - bringing that run-and-gun style to Seattle - but again, no head coaching experience. So when you break it all down, the timing was just right for Bob, and hopefully for the Sonics. 5 Comments |
C'mon Paul, thought you were a Sports guy that knew basketball. Bob Wiess is a nice guy that will get along with the players, thats fine and dandy and does not ruffle any feathers. Paul Silas should have been inteviewed and named the Head Coach, I see Wies as a Yes man to Wally Walker and Rick Sund who both should be fired for disrespecting Nate McMillan, and there terrible draft choices in this years draft(why do you think Nate really left). Silas is a proven winner. He had Cleveland on there way to the playoffs until they made a Coaching Change, He had Charlotte in the Playoffs for a couple of seasons then they moved to New Orleans and all of there Key players were hurt, Baron Davis, Jamal Mashburn and other key players on that team that made there season terrible. He is a Players coach that is defensive minded. He is Old school so he will demand respect and get the dicipline the Sonics need. Wiess has never had a winning team, has been fired from every posistion he has held as a head coach, so this is not a quick fix, its a get a yes man in there. Silas would have been the right choice, former Sonic, CHAMPION and a Seattle Favorite, would have been a great homecoming for him and the fans would have embraced him. Wiess will be fired by next season if not the middle of this season. Im glad Im a Laker Fan, at least they are making the right moves to get back to the playoffs and championship!
It is nice to find someone with head coaching experience, but it would have been nice to find someone with a couple winning seasons under his belt. I hope Weiss can make it work, but I think the Suns Assistant would have been a better choice.
James... What right moves are the Lakers making? Bringing in high school kids who are 3 or 4 years away from being NBA ready or is it that brilliant move of trading for a proven washout high school kid? Maybe it was over spending on a coach who has proven how unloyal he is and that he is really just there for the money.
Good job Lakers! The Clippers will be in the playoffs before the purple and gold.
