3:04 PM Fri, Jul 29, 2005 |

Southwest Airlines calls Sea-Tac one of the most expensive airports it uses. Should the airline be allowed to move its operation to Seattle's Boeing Field?
When you buy an airplane ticket, most of the money goes to planes, fuel and l...

Oregon Surplus: The real deal

11:20 AM Thu, Jul 28, 2005 |

I'm afraid we helped let the cat out of the bag for all of those eBay professionals who were buying crates full of jewelry confiscated from Oregon crooks and re-selling them at huge profits...

Tough questions for DSHS

11:05 AM Thu, Jul 28, 2005 |

Placing troubled kids into foster families is hard work. No one argues with that. Timothy and Jonathan Swann are perfect examples.

Their biological families were abusive and the boys were troubled children. The state placed them into a foster family who eventually adopted them. But then their adoptive father started molesting them. For years, ...

The $5,000 toilet

3:55 PM Wed, Jul 27, 2005 |

It's what we all need in our time of need. A toilet that greets you as you approach, raising its lid in honor of its master -- and should you require -- raising a second lid for those who'd rather stand up tall...

'We're still pioneers'

4:47 PM Tue, Jul 26, 2005 |

I vividly remember watching TV as a 16 year old, wrapped in a blanket, home from school with the flu. Like all the others, Space Shuttle Challenger looked like a flawless launch. That is, until those haunting words crackled across the intercom, "Go at throttle up..."

Doctors vs. lawyers

6:05 PM Fri, Jul 22, 2005 |

Are doctors or lawyers to blame for skyrocketing health care costs? Two competing initiatives claim to solve the problem.

Doctors say trial attorneys are driving up malpractice insurance premiums. Lawyers say, it's not them--...

Fire danger rising fast

2:06 PM Thu, Jul 21, 2005 |

The dry, sunny and warm weather is exactly what most of us have been waiting for, but it comes at a cost. The fire danger is rising fast. Not just in the mountains or eastern Washington, but right here in western Washington, including densely populated areas such as cities and suburbs...

Baby, it's cold outside

12:17 PM Thu, Jul 21, 2005 |

I swam from Madrona to the 520 bridge and back this week with a group of masters class swimmers. It took about an hour-and-a-half. It was fun, but the question everybody asked me was, "Isn't it cold out there?" No, not really.

'Healthy incentives' and the cost of health care debate

11:04 AM Thu, Jul 21, 2005 |

King County Government health care costs are projected to double by the year 2012. Double!!!! In just 7 years.

The number isn't truly meaningful until you think that you - the patient, the consumer, the corporation, or government - will be paying that cost.

And consider that your benefits would go down and your premiums would go up. Or is there a third way?...

Summer...Finally!

6:32 PM Wed, Jul 20, 2005 |

It seemed like it would never come. After a mildewed May, joyless June and at times soggy early July, the clouds have finally been cleaved by the sun. Temperatures are finally rising to where they should be this time of the year, topping out in the mid 70's.

Our beautiful backyard

3:14 PM Mon, Jul 18, 2005 |

Summer has finally arrived, so I took advantage of the warmth and sunshine by driving down to Mount St. Helens over the weekend. It had been a while since I'd viewed the mountain from Johnston Ridge, and in that time the dome had changed quite a bit. Sporadic earthquakes and slowly rising magma under the mountain had created some new features...

A moment With Michael King

9:43 AM Mon, Jul 18, 2005 |

Michael King is working his way down here at 333 Dexter Avenue. He began on the top floor in 1995 at NorthWest Cable News where he anchored the morning news with his lovely wife Meg Coyle. Three years ago, he started showing up for work on the third floor, joining KING-TV as a sports reporter/anchor. Today, Michael finds himself wiping crud off an old desk in a windowless, street-level office that he will share with Senior Producer Joan Kin...

Wanted: A sports reporter

4:17 PM Fri, Jul 15, 2005 |

We have a sports reporter job opening at KING 5. Usually I would receive about 30 resume tapes and get inquires from about five or six agents. I bet I have 300 tapes, and I've heard from more than a dozen agents. What gives? Sports departments in local TV stations are going the way of the whooping crane and spotted owl, as more and more stations are dropping sports from their newscasts. Most are falling victim to news consultants who advise ...

The President of the United States

4:03 PM Fri, Jul 15, 2005 |

Every now and then we hear a viewer complaint about our referencing President Bush as Mr. Bush. "He's the president and therefore he should always be called the president," go the viewer emails, phone calls and letters. Some of our viewers suspect a hidden political agenda at work. Well, that's not the case. And here's our case for calling the president "Mr. Bush" at times....

Goodbye Cuba. Hello Seattle.

3:37 PM Fri, Jul 15, 2005 |

We see TV footage all the time of Cubans in makeshift boats trying to sail their way to the promised land. Immigration law states that if they actually make it to American soil, they have a right to stay. But can you imagine leaving your family, friends, and every belonging you have behind -- all for the hope of a better life in a foreign country? Interviewing >> Continue reading: Goodbye Cuba. The gas tax in limbo

3:00 PM Fri, Jul 15, 2005 |

The governor's transportation plan hits a roadblock. A citizen initiative appears headed for the ballot, giving voters a chance to scrap the state's gas tax hike. If they do, then what?

Gas-tax opponents surprised everyone when...

Dying to be thin

9:17 AM Fri, Jul 15, 2005 |

We meet terrific doctors as part of our reporting for KING 5 HealthLink. But this week one of the most important things I learned was from a teenage patient. Dr. Cora Collette Breuner, a wonderfully warm and caring pediatrician at Children's Hospital, was sharing with us the pain she feels when seeing patients suffering the most severe hazards of not eating enough: the heart slows, the body chills and bones may break...

I love summer

4:25 PM Thu, Jul 14, 2005 |

I'm glad it's finally here. The summer sun, the fun, the swimming, the beach parties. And yes, the tan. But now I'm loving it with sunscreen. We at KING 5 HealthLink produced a documentary recently called Skin Cancer: A Burning Issue. It got this response from a viewer: "I have a four-inch scar on my face now because I tanned to a crisp. Then put ...

1:22 PM Thu, Jul 14, 2005 |

Go take a hike... and talk with me

6:54 PM Wed, Jul 13, 2005 |

Nothing can short-circuit a successful outing in the mountains as fast as bad weather. You can learn to avoid these experiences - and have a lot of fun - by attending Trails Fest this weekend at Rattlesnake Lake State Park in North Bend on Saturday. Come visit my talk on mountain weather and safety in the backcountry at 1 p.m. in which I'll explore tips from my new book "Mountain Weather". But that's only part of the fun...

Observations from London

6:19 PM Wed, Jul 13, 2005 |

I was in London the week of the bombings on 7/7 (sounds eerily like 9/11, doesn't it?), and I was amazed by two things. One, how stalwart the Brits are. Many of them got right back on their subways (tubes, they call them) the next day. Two, how many more people were watching cricket and rugby on the pub TV sets than were watching news about the bombings! This is a country that deserves the Olympics in 2012. I was just sorry they had only one...

Shuttle Discovery launch postponed

10:35 AM Wed, Jul 13, 2005 |

UPDATE: NASA has called off Wednesday's launch of space shuttle Discovery because of a faulty fuel-tank sensor. We'd had a very aggressive online and TV coverage plan, including posting updates throughout the morning and we had planned to video stream it online, but now we're standing down. Well, at least you can check out a content section we've created wi...

A new day has dawned, and it’s digitally enhanced. It’s high definition, DVR, time-shifted, fit-into-my-life television. And I thought cable was the biggest advancement in TV I’d see in my lifetime! KING5 News is embracing new technology and new ways to communicate with you, our viewing audience, as evident by the number of newsroom employees already posting on Blogger KING. It’s all very new to me, so my first few steps into this world ar...

A special peace, shattered

10:10 PM Mon, Jul 11, 2005 |

Tom Bowman was standing on the front lawn of his Kirkland home telling me about his two best friends lost in that climbing accident over the weekend. I asked him why the three climbed mountains. After a moment he reflected, "There is a special peace." For Bowman and others in the local climbing community, the freak rockfall is just a part o...

Hurricane reporting on TV

5:22 PM Mon, Jul 11, 2005 |

hurricane_dennis.jpgI was watching the coverage of Hurricane Dennis this weekend. I used to think that there was nothing more stupid than the sight of waterlogged reporters pelted by wind, rain and surf during live shots in a hurricane. For two days prior to the storm’s landfall, those same reporters did storie...

Daddy's little girl

3:25 PM Mon, Jul 11, 2005 |

It has been more than four years since I'd seen Michael Miller. His inspirational story is one of my all time favorites. A lot can happen in four years. Michael pulled up in his old truck last Tuesday, smiling from ear to ear. We shook hands and he gave me the news. He'd met a beautiful woman named Bec...

Seattle's monorail: Can it be saved?

4:10 PM Fri, Jul 08, 2005 |

The executive director is gone, the financing plan is scrapped and now the question is, what next?

For a few days, it seemed as if the monorail had fallen apart. The state treasurer and Seattle City Council were against it. T...

Martians living large?

3:06 PM Fri, Jul 08, 2005 |

It's the latest urban legend, at least among those with a little interest in astronomy. Essentially, the rumor is this: "Mars is coming close enough to the earth that it will appear twice as big as a full moon. It will never be this close again!"

The only thing missing is a suggestion to be on the lookout for little green Martians. What is true is that our planet and Mars will be approaching to within 69 million miles by this October. ...
